Sergej Rachmaninow (1873-1943) gehört zu den meistgespielten russischen Komponisten in Deutschland. Dabei ist er nicht unumstritten: Manchen Kritikern gilt seine Musik als sentimental und schwülstig. Charakteristische Merkmale sind ihr großer melodischer Atem und ihre ausgesprochene Klangpracht. Am bekanntesten wurden Rachmaninows Klavierkonzerte; andere Bereiche seines Schaffens, darunter viele Klavierminiaturen, Chorwerke und Lieder, stießen erst in jüngster Zeit auf anwachsendes Interesse.
