En el año 2015 se iniciaron unos operativos policiales en Venezuela que el gobierno nacional afirmó estaban destinados a liberar al pueblo de la delincuencia. En el medio de la noche, grandes contingentes de funcionarios policiales y militares rodeaban las zonas pobres de las ciudades, derrumbaban las puertas y sacaban a las familias de sus hogares para separarlas de los hombres, en su mayoría jóvenes. Al día siguiente, un alto funcionario informaba del éxito de la intervención policial y, orgulloso de sus logros, notificaba a la población que habían dado de baja a peligrosos delincuentes.

Este libro reporta una investigación realizada por ocho universidades venezolanas para conocer las voces de las familias víctimas de la letalidad policial y la opinión de la población. Ofrece novedosos conceptos y teorías que permiten una mejor interpretación sociológica y política de la violencia del Estado en América Latina. Con sus análisis y testimonios, los autores buscan acercarnos al horror que padecieron esas familias y demostrar que no fueron eventos aislados, sino el resultado de una política de muerte -una tanatopolítica- de un Estado que, saliéndose del marco jurídico, propició su ocurrencia con el propósito de aterrorizar a la población. Que fueron sicariatos de Estado cometidos por homicianos.
